I spoke to Jerry just a few weeks ago
because I wanted to talk
to him about Irving Berlin.
I'd heard that Irving Berlin
had played a big role in his career in his development and he said
yes that's true that he felt and still feels that Irving Berlin
is his mentor when he was just
a very very young man
he went to see Annie Get Your Gun
for the first time
he feels that that Berlin's music
is so available
so so pure and so simple in the right way
that he was able that night
to come home after the show
and never having heard these songs before
to sit down at the piano
and he played three of them
from memory
and he said to himself
that was the moment.
At that moment I said to myself
this is what I want to do.
