Applause I want
for spending your evening with us.
of some of the great people
who've written for our
American Musical Theater.
the end of the war.
Harry Truman was our president
and Walter Winchell was king.
Now, little would I
have believed in 1948
that by the season of 54, 55,
I would be chosen by the
theater world people
to be one of their most
promising personalities
of that season.
Some of the other promising
personalities that year
were Tony Perkins,
and Julie Andrews,
and Christopher Plummer.
When I was even, I think,
10 or 11 years old,
if anybody asked me
what I wanted to do when I grew up,
I'd say musical comedy.
I didn't even know what
musical comedy was.
I think I got the idea from the movies.
I was just nuts about the movies.
I was one of those kids
who'd go in early in the morning,
you know, stay all day, see every movie,
and they'd have to come and drag
me out for dinner.
You'd think I would want to do movies,
but what I wanted to do
was the shows that were in
the movies.
You know what I mean?
Like Mickey and Judy,
let's get together and do a
show.
See, that's what I wanted to do.
The first show I did
was one called Fla -hoo -lee.
Had a, thank you, had a delightful score
by Yip Harburg and Sammy Fane.
Cheryl Crawford was our producer,
and I remember just before
we opened in New York
at the Broadhurst Theatre,
there was a little blurb
in one of the New Jersey papers.
It said, on May 14th,
Cheryl Crawford will launch her new show,
Foolhardy,
with newcomer, Barbara Kuh.
Oh, that was 1951,
and I tell you, I'm so glad to still be doing it.
